Ex-votos have been and still are widespread and represent a form of popular devotion to a Saint or more frequently to the Virgin Mary . But not everyone knows that the origin of ex votos is prior to Christianity and that they were already widespread in ancient religions. They are in fact expressions of joy, gratitude and love. Any object can become an ex voto and among the most widespread we find the Heart, engine of the body and symbolic seat of human feelings. The lay votive heart, stripped of its religious value, does not lose its emotional and spiritual power. It is a universal symbol associated with life and love, present in all cultures.
